The First Week of Metal Detecting 2008
The first detecting week of 2008 fired up the season as they always seem
to do, collecting 20.62 ounces during their search for gold in the Ganes
Creek Valley. Vance 'Buzz' Rasmussen received the award for the largest
nugget of the week when he unearthed a 3.40 oz speciman. Gerry
McMullen was not far behind collecting two nice nuggets that weighed in at
2.93 oz and 2.45 oz respectively, bringing his collective total for the week
to 7.24 oz. All together over 45 nuggets were found during the week of
June 15-21. The first group was a pleasure as always, and we look forward
to the same kind of success for our second group of 2008.
The Second Week of Metal Detecting 2008
The Second Group of 2008 brought in 19.20 ounces, an almost identical feat
to the first group, who brought in 20.62 ounces. Nearly 40 ounces in two
weeks of metal detecting at Ganes Creek! Gerry McMullen on the last day
of detecting unearthed the biggest nugget of the week a 5.22 oz beauty,
which is featured, along with several other nuggets found during the week,
in our 'New Pictures' link below. We hope that everyone enjoyed their time
and we look forward to seeing familar faces in 2009.
The Big Nugget Crew on the 4th of July
Our third group of the season turned out to be the most successful of 2008 so
far, bringing in nearly 35 ounces! This includes two monsters, found by Aron
Starrat and later Don Johnston, weighing 8.73 ounces and 8.55 ounces. While
Aron's may have won the beauty pageant between the two, Don Johnston's
was particularly interesting as it was found on a bench just above camp, in an
area where metal detectorists had roamed for years. During the week
there were several other nuggets found over an ounce including a 3.10 ounce
beauty found by Frank Fehlner. This group in particular was one of nicest
we've had at Ganes Creek, and we would like to thank them for their
positive attitudes and for joing us during the first week of July 2008.
Mid July Brings Home the Gold
The largest nugget of the year, thus far, was uncovered by Jeff Sarvis, a 12.15 ounce marvel. The nugget was found in a push from the previous year lying under approximately 2 inches of material! The week also saw 4 nuggets uncovered over the one ounce mark, found by John Brewer, Jeff Sarvis, and two by Tim Altschwager. The total for the week added to 21.10 ounces! Congratulations Jeff on your rare and unique find, and to those on their way to Ganes Creek or thinking about visiting in 09', the big nuggets are still out there.
Metal Detecting July 13-19
A total of 26 nuggets were found by the final group of July 08'. Highlights of the week inlcuded a 1.39 oz nugget found by Steve W. in the shape of a heart, and 1.89 oz nugget brought home by David Lamb. Congratulations also to Dave Rankin who found the second largest nugget of the year, a 10 oz hunk of gold, found in the cobbles past the machine shop, that was unfortuantly missed by clients. We hope everyone enjoyed the Friday night send off as much as we did and thanks goes out to another wonderful group of detectorists.
To date approximately 115 oz have been found during the first 5 weeks of the 2008 season. That averages out to over 20 oz a week!
Two more Big Ones in August Completes 2008
The final week of metal detecting for 2008 came to a close witha total find of 18.88 ounces and another wonderful group of detectorists! Early in the week David Gurican brought in a
9.95 oz nugget, found upstream near "Bernie's Hill", and a couple days later Peggy Vockeroth and husband Terry found an 8.03 oz beauty in the same vicinity. Nine other nice jewelery piece nuggets were found throughout the week.
During the 2008 season highlights included five different nuggets that weighed in over the 8oz mark, the largest tipping the scales at 12.15 ounces, and over 20 nuggets that weighed in over the 1oz mark. Over the six weeks that made up the detecting season at Ganes Creek Alaska, at total of 147.34 ounces were found!
We can not say enough nice things about the great groups of metal detectorists that stayed with us this year. We want to thank them for their upbeat attitudes, understanding manner,
and almost constant enthusiasm.
Be sure to watch the website for 2009 booking information, beginning in Mid-October. We wish everone a great fall and winter season.
